System Design
Must I rewire my boat to install a new distribution or alarm panel?
Not necessarily. A new
distribution panel can be installed in a location different
from the original panel, with jumpers from the new panel to
terminal strips at the location of the original panel. The
boat's existing wiring then is connected to the terminal
strips.
Since the wiring of an alarm panel
is separate from the main distribution system, the
installation of an alarm system usually does not require
significant alterations in a vessel's electrical
system. Similarily, the installation of a distribution panel
of a voltage different from the main distribution panel (for
example, a shore power system) should not affect the rest of
a boat's wiring.
